Why I Love Cooking

I can still remember how bad dinners were when my husband and I first began living together. We had been dating for a couple of years and decided to get an apartment together. I was excited to be in a grown-up relationship, and I wanted to be the best girlfriend I could. Cooking scared me, though. I didn’t have much experience cooking, and I didn’t have anyone who could teach me.

In those first few years, we ate out and had frozen food a lot. As a result, I gained a lot of weight. I didn’t enjoy the food we were eating but I didn’t know what to do. I began looking for recipes in magazines and cookbooks. I would try to cook what looked good. Sometimes, it worked out, but other times, it was a complete failure. My husband was always a good sport about it, no matter how bad it tasted. I watched cooking shows and began to understand cooking processes and food pairings. This is when things began to turn around for me. I tried new ways of cooking and found out what we enjoy. I tried more recipes, and when I felt comfortable enough, I began creating new dishes myself.

For some reason, cooking rice was one of the hardest things I learned. It took me a while to get it right. It seemed like no matter what I did, it was either too mushy or too hard. I was determined to get it right and I eventually did. Now I can cook many different styles and types of rice without any problems.

I try to cook most things from scratch these days. I don’t follow many recipes; I just do what sounds good. My husband and daughter are pleased with most things I cook. There are still some failures, though.

Learning how to cook has given me confidence in myself. It was one of the first things I completely did on my own. Sitting together, as a family, eating a home cooked meal is one of my favorite parts of the day. It allows us to catch up on each other’s lives and spend quality time together.

My husband and I cook together now. He’s our master griller, and I take care of the sides. We like to try new things to see what we enjoy. Our daughter is learning how to cook, too. I’m glad that cooking is something I am able to teach her. I hope she will learn to create her own recipes for her family to enjoy together.
