Kayaking is My New Favorite Activity

I never spent much time in water, and it used to scare me, but last year, I decided I wanted to learn how to kayak. My husband and I have always enjoyed camping and being outdoors. My husband would kayak, but I was terrified. The thought of being out in the middle of the lake was overwhelming to me. I would run all the what ifs through my head and talk myself out of it.

Last year, as I began to heal and gain confidence in myself, I decided to try kayaking. We have inflatable kayaks because they are easier to transport, so we inflated them and went out on the water. It was windy on my first trip, so I mostly went in circles, but it was so much fun. I wore my life jacket, so I felt safe, and I just enjoyed myself. It was such a freeing experience for me. I realized just how capable I am.

We went to a few different lakes, had lunch on the water and took in our surroundings. It was amazing to see the world from a different perspective. I could ride next to the ducks, pull up next to the turtles who were sunbathing on a log, and hear the bugs as they played their sweet songs in the trees. It quickly became one of my favorite things to do.

I am still learning how to turn my kayak and I haven't quite beat my husband in a race, but that doesn't stop me from trying. Nature has always healed me, and kayaking is no exception. It allows me to get away from all the manmade things, and to experience the world for what it is.

Don't allow your fears to stand in the way of your life. Think about those things that you have always wanted to do but have been too afraid and do it. Don't ever count yourself out.
