Figuring Out Self-Care

How to take care of yourself when you are used to taking care of everyone else.

So many people talk about the importance of self-care these days. When you are used to taking care of everyone else, it can be hard to figure out how to take care of yourself. Self-care can be as simple as sitting in a quiet room for five minutes, or as big as taking a vacation by yourself.

Everyone's needs and realities are different so know that what works for others may not work for you. Self-care is meant to be relaxing and helpful so try not to put too much into it. Just find ways to incorporate things into your life that are important to you. It doesn't have a to become a routine, or one more thing to check off your to-do list. Self-care is knowing that you deserve to do the things that make you happy, doing things that you enjoy.

If you still feel stuck, here are some examples of self-care activities that you may be interested in.

  • Take a warm bath. Maybe add some essential oils or bath salts to your water. Drink a favorite beverage, read a book, listen to music, or enjoy the silence.

  • Read a few pages of a book before you go to bed.

  • Play your favorite song and dance or jump around.

  • Put a face mask and moisturizer on.

  • Get up before everyone else and do whatever you want.

  • Enjoy a cup of coffee or tea outside.

  • Go for a walk.

  • Write down your thoughts and dreams for the day.

  • Talk to someone who makes you happy.

  • Look at old pictures and reflect on happy memories.

  • Do yoga.

  • Sit in a quiet space for a few minutes.

  • Sit outside and look at the moon and stars at night.

Try to find something you enjoy and take the time to do it each month, week, or day.
