5 Ways to Save Money on Groceries

Here are ways I save money at the grocery store.

With inflation and cost of living increasing, finding ways to save money is important for many families who are trying to make ends meet. It is possible to have a healthy diet while saving money. You just have to have a plan in order to get the most for your money.

Meal Planning

Having a meal plan is crucial in cutting your grocery bill. Create a menu for meals you will cook throughout the week. While you are creating your menu, think about how leftovers can become a new meal, whether it be for lunch or dinner, another day of the week.

Write a list of all the items that will be needed for the week’s meals. Stick to your list while shopping to avoid impulse purchases. Consider purchasing generic or store brand products when they are available.

Cut Fruits and Vegetables Yourself

You can save big by cutting your own fruits and vegetables instead of purchasing the pre-cut options.

Purchase individual items rather than bagged items. Potatoes, apples, oranges, etc. can be purchased individually. This allows you to purchase only what you need and ensures you will have less waste.

Make Your Own Snack Bags

Instead of buying individual bags of snacks, purchase larger boxes and make your own snack bags or snack bowls. This also allows you to create portion sizes that are best for your family. Get the kids involved and teach them how to portion out their favorite snacks.

Shop the Perimeter Aisles

The healthiest foods are located on the perimeter aisles in the grocery store. This is also where you can find many less expensive items. Pre-cooked and pre-packaged items will cost you more, so the more you cook and prepare yourself, the more you can save. For example, purchase a block of cheese that can be shredded and sliced rather than buying pre-sliced and shredded cheeses.

Change the Way You Drink

Bottled drinks can be expensive. Consider purchasing a water filtration pitcher and use your own reusable water bottles. You can also make your own sports drinks and flavored drinks by the pitcher instead of purchasing juice boxes or pouches. I also like this option because I am able to put less sugar in the drinks while making them. It’s a win, win.

The biggest cost savings can be found in cooking and preparing items yourself. Start small and do what you have time for. Let me know how you’re saving money at the grocery store.
